Kid's Continence
When it comes to continence concerns, children need a different approach. We help tailor treatment so your child can understand their body, develop healthy bladder and bowel habits, and build confidence. It's not your child's fault, but with the right support they can do something about it.
Around 15% of five-year-olds and 5% of ten-year-olds experience bedwetting. Causes can include constipation, insufficient bladder capacity, overactive bladder, or underdeveloped waking responses. We recommend seeking help if bedwetting persists after age 7, occurs alongside daytime wetting, or resumes after six months of dryness.
Affecting roughly one to two children in a class of 30, daytime wetting is common in children over five. An overactive bladder may try to empty before reaching full capacity, causing frequency or urgency with minimal warning. We assess your child's bladder habits and develop a retraining programme to improve control.
Soiling often signals months of unrecognised constipation. Hardened stool accumulates and softer material leaks past, causing accidents. Treatment includes improving fluid and fibre intake, learning proper toilet positioning, and addressing any fears or sensory aversions. This condition requires consistent, longer-term management to prevent relapse.
Using a drinking and voiding chart over two days, we identify patterns and measure your child's bladder capacity. From there, we develop a tailored programme to help prevent bladder misbehaviour and gradually increase urine retention, building your child's confidence and independence.
Once basic self-help measures are established, a bed alarm can help the brain recognise bladder fullness signals during sleep. Your child learns to wake, use the toilet, change bedding, and reset the alarm. This process typically takes several months, with the alarm discontinued after 14 consecutive dry nights.
We offer 60-minute initial consultations and 30-minute follow-ups via remote appointment for families outside Wānaka. Intensive one-to-four-week programmes are also available for out-of-town families, with customised management plans, educational resources, and exercise programmes.
