What is a Ladder Barrel?

The ladder barrel is a piece of Pilates equipment that combines a ladder and a barrel. It looks a bit like a ladder and a barrel connected together — funnily enough! The barrel slides along the ladder rungs, making it adjustable for different body types. The padded surface enhances comfort during use.

Historical lore suggests the original machines used actual beer kegs for the barrel component!

Why Should I Use It?

Joseph Pilates designed this equipment as part of his original collection. Pilates equipment classes are a brilliant way to gain strength and flexibility in a controlled and mindful way.

The curved barrel surface supports spinal movement, accommodating flexion, extension, and lateral bending. For beginners who might be intimidated by the complexity of the reformer, the ladder barrel is beautifully stationary and still — it is you who moves!

You Want to See it in Action?

Spinal Extension

The Swan exercise targets hamstrings, glutes, and spinal extensors, promoting upright posture through back-strengthening work.

Spinal Flexion

Simple relaxation over the barrel provides thoracic spine mobility, creating length through the upper back.

Abdominal Work

Combined exercises engage core muscles alongside leg work, multiplying training benefits simultaneously.

Stretching

The equipment supports hamstring, glute, quadriceps, and inner thigh stretches with postural comfort.
