The word "Pilates" may stir up images of lycra-clad women who order double macchiatos with hot milk, and no foam, and discuss the status of their pelvic floor muscles... But did you know that Pilates was invented by a man, for men?
The Origins of Pilates
Joseph Pilates, a German trainer, created the method during World War I whilst interned in a British camp. He developed the programme to build flexibility, strength and stamina for his fellow inmates. After the war, Pilates established a gymnasium in New York, where the method gained popularity among performing artists, dancers, and athletes.
So why has Pilates become associated primarily with women? The truth is, it's an incredibly effective form of exercise for men—perhaps even more so than for women in some respects. Here's why blokes should be doing Pilates:
Improve Flexibility
Men naturally tend toward less flexibility than women. Potential causes include hormonal differences, joint structure and angles, gym programmes that focus on muscle building rather than lengthening, and reduced activity levels as we age.
Pilates balances strength with flexibility, preventing injuries and improving joint range of motion. Better flexibility means better performance in sport, reduced risk of muscle strains, and improved movement quality in everyday activities.
Increase Core Strength
When we talk about the "core," we're not just referring to your abs. The core encompasses the back, hips, abdominal muscles, pelvic floor, gluteal muscles, and scapula (shoulder blade) muscles. Core activation stabilises nearly all human movements—from lifting weights to swinging a golf club to picking up your kids.
Research demonstrates that athletes with stronger cores experience significantly lower injury rates. A strong core improves power transfer, protects your spine, and enhances performance in virtually every sport and physical activity.
Relieve Stress
Exercise releases endorphins that improve mood and reduce stress. Pilates takes this a step further by emphasising breathing techniques that support relaxation and improve sleep quality. In our fast-paced world, learning to breathe properly and move mindfully can be transformative for mental health and stress management.
Reduce Pain
Many soft tissue issues stem from stiffness or limited range of motion. Pilates increases movement in tissues and strengthens stabilising muscles, reducing pressure on joints. It's particularly beneficial for:
- Lower back pain (one of the most common complaints in men)
- Injury rehabilitation
- Post-surgery recovery
- Chronic pain conditions
- Poor posture-related discomfort
Improved Sex Life
Let's be honest—this matters. Strengthening core and pelvic floor muscles enhances intimacy and control. The pelvic floor isn't just for women; men have these muscles too, and strengthening them can improve performance and help prevent issues like incontinence later in life.
Improved Posture
Better posture distributes forces throughout the body more efficiently, reducing load on muscles and joints. Evidence suggests that upright posture correlates with improved mood, increased energy levels, and greater confidence. In our desk-bound culture, Pilates can counteract the effects of prolonged sitting and forward head posture.
Pilates for Athletes
Many elite male athletes incorporate Pilates into their training programmes, including rugby players, footballers, cricketers, and golfers. The functional strength, improved flexibility, and enhanced body awareness gained through Pilates directly translates to better athletic performance and reduced injury risk.
