Benefits of regular exercise and physical activity

From a boost in mood to a longer life, the benefits of exercise are countless. Being active helps to maintain a healthy weight and combat health conditions or disease. Regular physical activity delivers substantial wellness improvements, from emotional uplift to increased longevity. Yet many of us struggle with identifying the appropriate amount and types of exercise we should be doing.

How Much Exercise Do You Need?

The World Health Organisation provides clear guidelines for adult physical activity. They suggest pursuing 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity weekly—that's approximately 30 minutes daily, five days per week.

No Time? Break It Up!

For time-constrained or deconditioned individuals, the good news is that physical activity can be accumulated throughout the day. Three 10-minute sessions scattered across your day are just as effective as one 30-minute session. This makes exercise much more achievable for busy people.

Don't Forget Strength Training

In addition to aerobic activity, muscle strengthening work is crucial. Exercises including squats, lunges, planks, and resistance training should occur for a minimum of 20 minutes, at least twice weekly. Strength training:

  • Builds and maintains muscle mass
  • Strengthens bones
  • Improves balance and coordination
  • Boosts metabolism
  • Supports functional independence as we age

What Does "Moderate Intensity" Mean?

Exercise intensity correlates with heart rate ranges of 50-70% of your maximum capacity. But there's a simpler way to gauge intensity without complicated calculations—the "talk test":

During moderate-intensity exercise, you should be able to comfortably chat, but not sing.

If you can belt out your favourite tune whilst exercising, you need to increase the intensity. If you're too breathless to hold a conversation, you might be working too hard for sustained moderate exercise (though brief periods of higher intensity can be beneficial).

Exercise Beyond the Gym

Physical activity needn't involve expensive gym memberships or fancy equipment. The key is finding movement you enjoy, making it far more likely you'll stick with it long-term. Here in Wānaka, we're blessed with incredible opportunities for enjoyable movement:

  • Hunting: Tramping through the backcountry provides excellent cardiovascular and strength benefits
  • Gardening: Digging, planting, and maintaining your garden is surprisingly effective exercise
  • Dancing: Whether it's formal classes or dancing in your living room, it counts!
  • Cycling: Around the lake, to work, or on mountain bike trails
  • Household responsibilities: Vacuuming, mopping, and cleaning are all physical activity
  • Playing with children or grandchildren: Active play keeps you moving and strengthens relationships
  • Walking: The simplest and most accessible form of exercise
  • Water activities: Swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding on our beautiful lakes

The Health Benefits of Regular Exercise

Research consistently demonstrates that regular physical activity reduces risks of:

  • All-cause mortality (living longer!)
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Stroke
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Specific cancers (including breast and colon cancer)
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Falls and fractures (through improved balance and bone density)
  • Obesity and associated health complications
