Hurtful Words and Back Pain – The Truth About Your Spine

Understanding back pain and spine health

With over 80% of New Zealanders experiencing back pain at some point, the language we use to describe it matters more than you might think. Common terminology may actually be impeding your recovery.

Common Phrases That Hurt More Than Help

Patients frequently use phrases like:

  • "My back is out"
  • "My pelvis is out of alignment"
  • "I've slipped a disc"
  • "My vertebrae are misaligned"

While these phrases are commonly used, they create negative associations that can actually impair recovery.

The Reality of Your Spine

The spine comprises 33 vertebrae supported by ligaments and muscles—a strong, mobile structure designed for daily movement. Back pain typically stems from:

  • Muscle or ligament strain
  • Postural imbalances
  • Stiffness in spinal joints

Not from structural displacement or "things being out."

Why Language Matters

Using phrases such as "my back is out" or "I've slipped a disc" creates negative associations, making the spine sound fragile and unstable. Research demonstrates that using negative language to describe back pain can impair recovery and should therefore be avoided.

This terminology is also anatomically inaccurate. Your vertebrae aren't "out of place" – they're exactly where they should be, supported by strong ligaments and muscles.

What Really Happens During Treatment

Therapeutic techniques like mobilisations and manipulations improve spinal mobility and provide pain relief through releasing tight structures—not by "putting things back." The cracking sounds you hear during treatment result from harmless gas bubbles forming in the joint (cavitation), not realignment of bones.

The Most Important Recovery Strategy

Remain active and avoid movement-related fear. Your spine is strong and designed to move. Understanding what's genuinely happening—rather than accepting simplified, inaccurate explanations—empowers you to take control of your recovery.
